Last night, 14th September 2011, the so called ‘Staffing Committee’ consisting of 4 councillor’s, Cllr Afzal Akram (labour), Cllr Clare Coghill (labour) Cllr Karen Bellamy (labour) and Cllr Matt Davis (Conservative) decided to rubber stamp the proposals to cut the terms and conditions of the workforce.
Unions argued that staff on scale 6 and below would suffer extreme hardship if the terms and conditions were agreed. Unions informed council members that low paid staff such as meals on wheels workers, residential care workers, school caretakers, environment and highways stood to lose thousands of pounds a year from their meagre salaries if the terms and conditions proposals were agreed.
Cllr Clare Coghill asked how much was being spent on consultants and was informed by Terrie Borkett, Finance, that Waltham Forest spent £18 million pounds last year on consultants, agency and interim staff.
Unions also pointed out that the next item on the agenda was phase 14, this proposal, if agreed, would give some Chief Officers increases of between £2,000 and £20,000 per year.
With this knowledge and despite our pleas to protect our lower paid workers the ‘The Staffing Committee’ decided to agree to the cuts to your terms and conditions. We felt that we had just witnessed our lower paid members being mugged! But we will fight on! Just take note of the members making these decisions when you are next asked to vote!!!!!!
