The decision to convert Connaught School for Girls into an Academy is not supported by parents, staff, local councillors, our MP John Cryer and the local community. The local NUT group have been on discontinuous strike action for weeks and it is clear that this decision has been made on the basis of contested information.
Staff and parents have been misinformed about the need for conversion and we now know that there is no real reason for Connaught to become an academy. The decision was taken by only 8 out of 20 governors and was based on reasons that we now know to be unfounded fears about the future of Connaught School for Girls.
There are no local authority plans to reduce the Connaught budget. The local authority can’t do that anyway and they have given written assurances that there is no intention to merge with another school nor any plans to threaten the single sex nature of the school.
We have agreed that we support the teachers of the NUT in their action and we can play an important role in the campaign by joining the Lobby of the Board of Governors on Wednesday 12th December from 6 to 7pm at Connaught School For Girls.
Please join us that evening and let the governors know that we support staff at Connaught School and do not want to see the school converted to Academy status.
