UNISON members in Waltham Forest have voted to reject the measly pay offer of 1%. The offer is an insult to the hard working public servants and service providers of Waltham Forest and comes on the heels of a three year pay freeze. Members generally are about 16% worse off that they were three years ago as a result of this unfair and unjust pay policy. Our members working in jobs that involve shift work and weekend working are even worse off. They are now about 26% down on where they were three years ago thanks to the Council imposed new contracts issued last year on a ‘sign it or be sacked’ basis. Continue reading
Working part-time can mean anything from working for just a few hours a week, to working almost full time. In local government, everyone working fewer than 37 hours (36 in London) is considered to be part-time. Some of the main ways of working include: a set number of hours each week, flexible hours, term time only, annualised hours or job sharing. Part-time workers have the same statutory employment rights as any other employee, whether you are employed on a permanent or fixed-term contract. However, the benefits are normally ‘pro rata’, meaning that they should be in proportion to your hours. Continue reading
