If the answer is yes then why not consider becoming a UNISON pensions rep. We are looking for members who would be willing to attend our local Pensions Committee. They meet every 3 months on a Monday evening (7:30pm) where the Trustees of our Scheme make decisions on how the scheme should be managed. At the moment our role is strictly observation only.
However, the current governance proposals suggest that trade unions should be involved in the decision making process and that there should be an equal number of trade union reps as Council and management reps on the Pensions Committees, so we will need a small team of reps to do this in the future.
It is important that we get our voice heard and that we are involved in the decisions about where we invest the scheme’s money. At the moment members pension contribution can go towards investing in companies that do not recognise trade unions or even worse actually victimise trade unionists.
