Three sorry tales from Waltham Forest Academies

Three Waltham Forest Academy Schools have been featured in both the local and national the press recently – and not for good reasons.

First up Willow Brook Primary Academy in Leyton fell foul of an Ofsted inspection earlier this year and has been placed in Special Measures.  The Ofsted Inspectors rated the Academy as inadequate in terms of achievement of pupils; quality of teaching; behaviour and safety of pupils; and leadership and  management. As a result the Head Teacher has been replaced and the School is now looking at joining a larger Academy chain alongside its neighbouring School, Riverley Primary.

Secondly the local Guardian and the Daily Mail recently reported that an investigation found that Silver Birch Academy Trust Head Teacher, Patricia Davies, who earns a staggering £170,000 a year, spent £4,500 on a new desk and £1,700 on a fridge for her office at Whittingham Primary Academy in Walthamstow.  In total  officials from the Education Funding Agency discovered that Ms Davies had splashed out over £46,000 on office furniture and pot plants. The Silver Birch Academy Trust also runs the Chingford Hall Primary Academy in Chingford.

Finally the Waltham Forest Guardian revealed this week that Gerrard Gibbs who was employed as a Learning Mentor and safeguarding officer at Roger Ascham Primary Academy has been convicted on five counts of downloading indecent photographs of a child.  He was sentenced to a 12 month community supervision order and placed on the sex offenders register for five years. Mr Gibbs was also a Foster carer.
