13.30-16.30 CRISIS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN RURAL & SMALL URBAN AREAS
The question of accessibility affects so many different people and groups that it is something requiring constant attention. There have been many advances made but major deficiencies remain and across the region provision is patchy.
In rural & small urban areas the cuts to transport provision – notably by bus – are affecting the lives of a wide range of people, affecting ability to work and undermining policies to reduce car use. Rail fare costs and emphasis on commuting priorities further reduce many people’s mobility – at all ages and particularly hitting the poorest in society.
We are inviting a wide range of those affected and those dealing with the subjects to contribute. We want to get a set of bullet points for the coming year and beyond. With a General Election and a new Government coming into office we need to have a clear idea of the key issues to push for.
Trade unions want an integrated publicly owned transport system but we also have to address the immediate concerns facing communities. This Conference will tackle that job.
