The UNISON Regional Black Members Annual General Meeting held in London were honoured to welcome Chuka Umunna MP for Streatham to their event.
Chuka, a corporate employment law solicitor by profession, studied English Law and French Law at the University of Manchester and the University of Burgundy, followed by Nottingham Law School addressed delegates with great conviction and confidence.
Following his election to Parliament in June 2010 he was elected by fellow MPs to serve on the Treasury Select Committee and in October 2010 was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Ed Milband, former leader of the Labour Party.
He was Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills until his discussion with the newly elected leader Jeremy Corburn and mutual agreement to step down and return to the back benches.
Chuka spoke of his intention to commence with a joint project with Keith Vaz, which is currently being developed and has been positively welcome and endorsed by Jeremy Corburn.
Despite his busy schedule Chuka held a 40 minute question and answer (Q&A) session with delegates where he answered all of the questions in my opinion openly and honestly, sometimes not agreeing with the questioners view on issue and giving a clear reason as to why not.
It is a very refreshing approach that more politicians should adopt.
One thing we all agreed on was the vindictive and unacceptable Tory Trade Union Bill where he proudly announced that all Labour MP’s voted against, having had its second reading on Monday 14th September, following this session, Chuka proceeded to take a selfie with the 107 delegates in attendance.
