In the words of Paul Simon – Set Yourself Free

The problem is all inside your head she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to become a governor

She said it’s really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won’t be lost or misconstrued
But I’ll repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to become a governor

You just fill out the pack, Jack
Make a new School Development Plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just vote your school free

Hold off the trust, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just hold off the academy, Lee
And set your school free

She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
About the fifty ways to become a governor

She said why don’t we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning you’ll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to become a governor

You just fill out the pack, Jack
Make a new School Improvement Plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just vote yourself free
Hold off the trust, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just hold off the academy, Lee
And set your school free

The reasons you should become a School Governor

Your governing body may be considering becoming an academy. There will be some staff representation on your workplace governing body and you do not have to be a teacher to stand. You might also wish to stand on another governing school, as a parent, a member of the local authority (if you are in a political party) or as a community governor.

It is important that there is staff representation on governing bodies, as their decisions will affect your workplace.

Academy status is often rushed through and is a privatisation of schools.  It means that parental and staff representation is non-existent, with deregulation of staff’s pay and conditions, and an end to university based training for teachers and Qualified Teacher Status.

I would encourage you to also join the Anti-Academies Alliance and check out their website  http://antiacademies.org.uk/
