Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Officer and Joint Trade Unions Health and Safety Convenor role is currently vacant.

Some of the work involves providing both individual and group support for the Team of Safety Reps; work in partnership with the Council’s Safety Advisors by carrying out audits eg, attend regular meetings to negotiate issues on behalf of members with management, carry out building inspections, give advice and in some circumstances represent members around sickness and disability issues,  the role actively promotes health and safety using areas such as European Week of Health and Safety and Workers’ Memorial Day.

Waltham Forest UNISON believes Health and Safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone. UNISON is at the forefront of major campaigns on stress, repetitive strain injury, back pain and violence. We are campaigning for a new way of working, one that guarantees every worker a safe and healthy workplace.

Waltham Forest UNISON has a network of Health and Safety Representatives who tackle workplace Health and Safety issues by:

•Making representations to the employer on behalf of members on any health, safety and welfare matter

•Representing members in consultation with Health and Safety Executive inspectors or other enforcing authorities

•Inspecting designated workplace areas

•Investigating any potential hazards, complaints by members and causes of accidents, dangerous occurrences and diseases.

The Branch Health and Safety Officer co-ordinates and supports the work of workplace Health and Safety Representatives.
