The London Borough of Waltham Forest is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court this Friday for it’s failure to manage asbestos in the Town Hall basement area that UNISON members have worked in for many years. Attached is a flyer for a lunchtime event at the Town Hall on the 26th May. It would be of interest to all members who have been exposed to asbestos fibres or anyone who may be exposed to them in the future, so just about everyone. With Waltham Forest local authority being sentenced for failing to manage asbestos within its own Town Hall on the 29th May, it is very timely.
The sessions are from 12-1pm and 1-2pm in the Town Hall Council Chamber.
Workers’ Memorial Day......
UNISON co-hosted the Workers Memorial Day (WMD) event at the Town Hall with Waltham Forest Trades Council on 28th April, the day when trade unionists across the globe remember those killed at work and pledge to fight for the living. Our two local Labour MP’s, John Cryer and Stella Creasy both turned despite having hectic General Election Campaign schedules. They spoke very supportively on the issue of improving health and safety at work and stayed for the entire ceremony, laying a bunch of flowers down from the local Labour Party. Continue reading
UNISON in Waltham Forest co-hosted this year’s event at Walthamstow Town Hall with Waltham Forest Trades Council to mark International Workers Memorial Day, which is held on 28 April every year.
Members who have been exposed to asbestos through their work activities should register the fact that they have been exposed to asbestos with Thompsons solicitors who act on our behalf in all claims for damages against negligent employers. The Thompsons/UNISON form is attached here and can be printed and used by members.
Members who have been exposed to asbestos through their work activities should always fill out their employers accident/ incident form as this starts the evidentiary paper trail if in the unfortunate event that a claim for an industrial disease ever arises.
