New date set for asbestos sentencing for Waltham Forest Council......

Sentencing was due to be passed on Monday at Southwark Crown Court but has been delayed as there was insufficient time to hear the case.  The date is now set for 29th May.

Waltham Forest Council sentencing in respect of asbestos failings delayed......

Southwark Crown Court was due to sentence Waltham Forest Council today but the court has announced it has to set another date.

Waltham Forest council will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court over asbestos......

O n Monday 30th March the sentencing of Waltham Forest council will take place for putting employees’ lives at risk by failing to deal with deadly asbestos in the basement of its town hall.  We will have reps present at the hearing and a report and photos will be published next week.

Workers’ Memorial Day – 28 April......

It is just about a month away and preparations are coming along with several speakers confirmed (Stella Creasy MP, Steve white NUT, Jim Wennell FBU, Lorna Webster of Thompsons). This year we are selling purple forget-me-knot ribbons with the proceeds going to ELMS – East London Mesothelioma Support group and the Bhopal Medical appeal.   The ceremony will be held between 1-2pm in Walthamstow Town Hall grounds in Forest Rd, E17.  All welcome.

Alfie Perrin manslaughter trial: supervisor was ‘indifferent’ to 16-year-old’s safety......

Alfie Perrin, a carpenter apprentice, slipped from scaffolding at Camden Road, Wanstead, through a gap 72cm wide to his death two stories high into the street below in November 2012.  Click here to read the full story in the local press.

purple ribbonThis year’s international theme set by the international labour organisation is “getting rid of dangerous substances “and as such UNISON/Waltham Forest Trades Council are focusing on asbestos and hazardous chemicals at this year’s WMD. Confirmed speakers so far are Jim Wennell FBU, Lorna Webster Thompsons Solictors’ (asbestos specialist), Steve White NUT, Jim Kelly Unite, Stella Creasy MP, Dave Knight UNISON (officiating) and a member of the Joint Union Asbestos Committee. UK Report on The Management of Asbestos in Schools......

The ConDem government have been delaying the “managing asbestos in schools” report for over 8 months and finally after pressure from MP’s, Joint Union Asbestos Committee and unions such as UNISON it was released by the Department for Education this week and is frankly a disappointing document that gives scant comfort to the UNISON members and past pupils who have, and as importantly still will, develop asbestos related diseases such as the killer cancer Mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos fibres that are endemic in the schools estate (over 85% of schools contain asbestos).
