How much of a risk do new cleaning agents pose to you?......

UNISON survey aims to find out scale of problem in wake of concerns over rise in superbugs

New and more powerful cleaning products are becoming more and more common in the workplace – but how do the chemicals they contain affect people’s health and safety?

That is a question that a new UNISON health and safety survey sets out to answer after the union became aware of several incidents. Workers have developed breathing problems and even been overcome by fumes in some cases.

Although the use, and potential misuse, of more powerful cleaning products might be sparked by increasing awareness of so-called superbugs such as c difficile and MRSA, the problem is not confined to the health sector.

That is why UNISON is asking cleaners – and others who regularly do cleaning work – to take part in the survey, wherever they work.

The survey can be found online at surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TJ682RJ. Continue reading

Thousands of workers at risk of disease......

Most people have probably never heard of mesothelioma unless they know of someone who has suffered from it, but it is a form of cancer of the external lining of the lung. It is caused by exposure to asbestos and invariably fatal. The latest Health and Safety Executive report shows that, for the third year running, the number of deaths from mesothelioma has been over 2,500 and this level is likely to continue for at least the rest of the decade. HSE: What social partnership means to the Tories......

On Friday the Government announced  a number of new appointments to the board of the Health and Safety Executive. The DWP did not indicate who they were representing when they made the announcement but, after a request from Hazards magazine, the HSE confirmed that two of the new appointments and one of the reappointments were employee representatives. One of the new members is Kevin Rowan who was nominated by the TUC. The other is Susan Johnson. She is not from any trade union, she is not a health and safety activist or a safety representative, she was not nominated by any union body. In fact she is a former senior manager and businesswoman. Last year she retired down from her job as Chief Executive of the Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service. Before that she was Chief Executive of Northern Business Forum, and an ex director of the food company Greggs.  Click here to read more.
