Workers’ Memorial Day

As always Workers Memorial Day is on 28th April 2012. This year it falls on a Saturday so our branch will be running two events.  The first will be on Friday 27th April at the Town Hall from 1pm to 2pm when we will hold a remembrance rally outside the Assembly Hall. The branch will be selling the purple ribbons from early Friday morning and at this event. Remember to buy and wear the purple ribbon to commemorate this day when we remember those who have died at work and pledge ourselves to fight for the living

On Saturday 28th April itself, the branch, along with Waltham Forest Trades Council is holding another rally in Walthamstow Town Square from 12:30 to 1:30pm, please come along and support this event. Please bring a pair of old work shoes with you if you can as we will be building a pile of “dead man’s shoes” as a symbol of remembrance to all those workers who have been killed either at work or because of their work

These events are particularly important this year as the government has launched unprecedented attacks on health and safety calling it a burden on business. It is no surprise then that accident rates, fatalaties at work and work related sickness are all rising. It is time for us to stand up for our own health and safety and to demand that the government work with us to prevent deaths at work rather than allowing employers to continue to allow their employees to be killed because of a lack of vigilance over health and safety.

Please come along to these events and join the campaign to prevent deaths at work
