In Waltham Forest Council our members are constantly being told that the Council has to be incredibly careful with its money. Recent cuts in pay, jobs and services are all examples of how prudent the Council needs to be. However, this clip from Private Eye magazine suggests something different. Here it is alleged that the Council basically lost £9 million. At the same time they were making our own Careers Service staff redundant, closing down the Connexions Service and dismissing nearly all our Youth Service staff because the Council maintained that they could no longer afford those services due to the government decision to do away with the grants that funded those services. It would seem that they could still afford to lose all that money, probably more than the savings that they made through these cuts.
A healthy march of several hundred trade unionists, Whipps Cross workers and concerned local residents made its way from the Green to the Town Square. Our branch banner was ably assisted by branch members Sarah from Chapel End Children’s Centre and Esther from George Mason Lodge, our thanks go to them and to Huw Davies who carried the banner much of the way. It was also great to see several of our retired members on the march.
The meeting will take place at the Town Hall Council Chamber 12 noon to 2pm. The meeting will discuss Health and Safety in Waltham Forest – members who have any health and safety concerns can bring them to the meeting. We hope to have a speaker from the Blacklist Support Group and we will also debate any motions sent into the office up to the day before the meeting.
