Monday 28th April is the International Workers Memorial Day, a day when the trade union movement remembers those who have died as a result of their work and renews its commitment to fight for better health and safety for those still working.
This year, the day has particular resonance as deaths at work are rising at the same time as regulations are being weakened and enforcement of health and safety rules and regulations is being seriously reduced.
To mark the occasion UNISON in Waltham Forest has organised a lunch time event outside the Assembly Hall at 1pm on Monday 28th April 2014. All UNISON members, friends and family are welcome. We hope that there will be a good attendance to hear our guest speakers including John Cryer and Vincent Borg (UNISON Head of Health and Safety).
The day is also marked by the wearing of a purple ribbon. A £1 donation, that will be passed on to a charity working with people suffering from work related illness or injury, will secure a purple ribbon. These are available from the UNISON office and we would like all health and safety reps to pick some up and sell them at their workplaces on the day itself.
The branch looks forward to seeing members at the event.
