Workers’ Memorial Day – 28 April

purple ribbonThis year’s international theme set by the international labour organisation is “getting rid of dangerous substances “and as such UNISON/Waltham Forest Trades Council are focusing on asbestos and hazardous chemicals at this year’s WMD. Confirmed speakers so far are Jim Wennell FBU, Lorna Webster Thompsons Solictors’ (asbestos specialist), Steve White NUT, Jim Kelly Unite, Stella Creasy MP, Dave Knight UNISON (officiating) and a member of the Joint Union Asbestos Committee.

You may have noticed that we DO NOT have any Councillors, the Mayor or the Chief Executive giving speeches this year. This is a conscious decision on behalf of UNISON and the Waltham Forest Trades Council. If you plead guilty to breaches of health and safety law relating to asbestos (and not one council official or elected member has taken personal responsibility or resigned) you do not deserve to give a speech about the concern for the safety of workers (they have not protected their own).

UNISON members will suffer any consequences of exposure to asbestos, local residents will in effect have to pay the Local Authority’s fine through the Council Tax and the Chief Executive and the Leader of the Council get off Scot free – it’s just not right.
