We are sad to announce the passing of long term trade union activist, Ray Bellas, who died last week following a long, tough battle against cancer. Ray was known to many in UNISON in Waltham Forest. He was Staffside Secretary, Branch Secretary and a UNISON rep, and NALGO before that, for many many years. He represented many members over those years. Our sympathy and condolences go out to his family.
O n Monday 30th March the sentencing of Waltham Forest council will take place for putting employees’ lives at risk by failing to deal with deadly asbestos in the basement of its town hall. We will have reps present at the hearing and a report and photos will be published next week.
UNISON local government delegates from across the UK met at a special conference in London yesterday to debate the lessons of the recent pay campaign and agree a set of strong proposals to increase member engagement and democratic participation in every aspect of future pay campaigns. It is just about a month away and preparations are coming along with several speakers confirmed (Stella Creasy MP, Steve white NUT, Jim Wennell FBU, Lorna Webster of Thompsons). This year we are selling purple forget-me-knot ribbons with the proceeds going to ELMS – East London Mesothelioma Support group and the Bhopal Medical appeal. The ceremony will be held between 1-2pm in Walthamstow Town Hall grounds in Forest Rd, E17. All welcome.

The film is to finally get a public showing in the UK as the closing film to this year’s London Asian Film Festival. Although the film has been released in both the US and in India it is yet to be distributed here in the UK, and this represents the first chance for the general public to see the film.
