UNISON Branch Officers donate £240 to local and international welfare charities.

Julia Poynter, Families Convenor;  Chris Street, UNISON Branch Secretary  and Bill Palmer, Joint Union Convenor for Health and Safety donate £240 on behalf of UNISON, GMB and UNITE the Union to local and international welfare charities.

This year UNISON, GMB and UNITE decided that all the monies raised by selling Workers’ Memorial Day ribbons would be donated to both a UK based charity and an international based charity.

The charities chosen were ELMs and The Bhopal Medical Appeal. ELMS is an East London support group for workers and their families who are suffering the devastating consequences of Mesothelioma an incurable form of cancer caused only by exposure to asbestos. The Bhopal medical appeal is dedicated to providing ongoing medical services to the generations of people that have and still are suffering from the effects of the chemical disaster that occurred over 30 years ago in the Indian city of Bhopal.

Both charities rely solely on public support and our thanks go out to all those people who bought and wore a “forget me knot “ purple ribbon.
