Sad news from Mogadishu, but Somalian unions will survive......
Yesterday we received the awful news that another Somalian trade unionist had been murdered. Our colleagues in Mogadishu, from the ITUC-affiliated FESTU, reported that Brother Abdiasis Mohamed Ali, a journalist and a member of the journalists’ union NUSOJ, was killed by two men armed with pistols. Thousands of workers at risk of disease......
Most people have probably never heard of mesothelioma unless they know of someone who has suffered from it, but it is a form of cancer of the external lining of the lung. It is caused by exposure to asbestos and invariably fatal. The latest Health and Safety Executive report shows that, for the third year running, the number of deaths from mesothelioma has been over 2,500 and this level is likely to continue for at least the rest of the decade. Every two years the TUC asks trade union health and safety representatives about the issues that affect them, and the results are always really interesting. The 2016 survey results have just been published and show that across every sector the biggest issue they deal with is stress. Bullying and harassment is also becoming more of an issue. Direct government funding of Trade Union Studies in England has now ceased. Just half the college trade union studies departments that existed a year ago remain. The TUC is supporting the programme in colleges during this transitional year (2016/17) with one-off funding from the TUC Educational Trust. Please click on the link below to find out more.
