Local people will hold a sleep out in solidarity with homeless people sleeping on the street and to remember those who have died there as well as providing free meals, dental checks, clothing, haircuts and sleeping bags at event marking World Homeless Week in Waltham Forest.
The sleep out will be held on the night of Saturday 12/13 October at Walthamstow Town Square at the top of the market.
Tommy’s Kitchen will provide hot food and drink at William Morris Community Centre, 6-8 Greenleaf Rd, E17 6QQ on Wednesday Mornings and at Eggs and Bacon, Wood Street, E17 on Tuesday mornings.
Food and other services will also be available to the homeless at other venues, including marking World Homeless Day on 6 October with support and first aid training at Kukoolala Cage, 3 Marsh Lane E10.
In a piece yesterday the BBC reported: “A record number of homeless people died last year, marking the biggest increase in deaths since reporting began, official data shows.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics show an estimated 726 homeless people died in England and Wales in 2018. This is a 22% rise from 2017 and the highest surge since the data was first collected in 2013.”
