Health and safety and organising – interactive guide for union reps......

There is a interactive resource available for anyone who wants to consider how to make their workplace safer through building a strong union.

Last year the TUC published a guide to organising and health and safety. It gave simple, straightforward advice to help you use health and safety arguments to achieve an increase in members and a more active membership, with a greater number of health and safety representatives.  The guide was designed to make you more effective on the ground – where real gains can be made – and help create a greater culture of safety in your workplace, and could be used, not only in workplaces where unions are recognised, but also those where they are not yet recognised.

Cancer all-clear for night work was based on ‘bad science’......

An Oxford University study that concluded the classification of night work as a cause of breast cancer in women is no longer justified was based on ‘bad science’, top researchers have warned.

The large scale ‘meta-analysis’, published online on 6 October 2016 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI), concluded “night shift work, including long-term night shift work, has little or no effect on breast cancer incidence.” It added the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) ranking of night work as a ‘probable’ cause of breast cancer in women “is no longer justified.”

But three of the most respected epidemiologists on night work and breast cancer have now said they “fully disagree” with this conclusion, noting a succession of methodological flaws in the research “invalidate” its conclusions.

Wot about the workers? Stressed to death but not wanted at HSE Stress Summit?......

The silencing of the workers’ voice on HSE board by the DWP appointing an employer to a workers seat  is only one way of shutting us out.  As part of the HSE ‘Strategy’ Help GB Work Well, a health and work strategy has been developed to  focus on three priorities: preventing occupational stress and related mental health issues;  musculo skeletal disorders; and occupational  lung disease.  This was ‘soft  launched’ on 15th December by DWP Minister responsible Penny Mordaunt.  And it will be followed by 5 roadshows next year between January and March – 1 each in: Scotland, Wales, The North, Midlands, and South with a national conference in May probably in London. More information and dates maybe before Christmas.

How much of a risk do new cleaning agents pose to you?......

UNISON survey aims to find out scale of problem in wake of concerns over rise in superbugs

New and more powerful cleaning products are becoming more and more common in the workplace – but how do the chemicals they contain affect people’s health and safety?

That is a question that a new UNISON health and safety survey sets out to answer after the union became aware of several incidents. Workers have developed breathing problems and even been overcome by fumes in some cases.

Although the use, and potential misuse, of more powerful cleaning products might be sparked by increasing awareness of so-called superbugs such as c difficile and MRSA, the problem is not confined to the health sector.

That is why UNISON is asking cleaners – and others who regularly do cleaning work – to take part in the survey, wherever they work.

The survey can be found online at surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TJ682RJ. Continue reading
